The Stirling Aircraft Society

The Chairman and Committee wish to announce the inauguration of the new and exciting - STIRLING AIRCRAFT SOCIETY. Below is a brief outline of our aims and aspirations for the future.

Stirling Aircraft Society is legally constituted and democratically administered with a vibrant and enthusiastic committee in place. We produce a quarterly in-house Magazine or Newsletter 'Stirling Times', free to all members and the subscription is £8 Sterling (eight pounds) annually.

In keeping with the aims of the Stirling Aircraft Association's original founder Frank Clear DFC, who's vision inspired the formation of the association; our objectives remain the same. We continue to strive to support and encourage the charitable organisation "The Stirling Project". Already they have completed the restoration of a FN 5 Turret and are now working on 5 other parts of the aircraft. Their objective of constructing a forward section of a fuselage is well under way, and they continue to make good progress recreating design drawings of parts. A dedicated team effort certainly worthy of our wholehearted support.

We hope during the coming months, to be in attendance at some of the many Air Shows that are held annually within the U.K. to publicize the Stirling Aircraft Society. We shall be endeavouring to raise the profile of the existence of this, the first and largest of the wartime 4 engined Bombers, designed as such, in service with the ROYAL AIR FORCE.

We are privileged to have Group Captain G. Blacklock O.B.E. D.F.C. D.F.M. as our President. Group Captain Blacklock was the first R.A.F. pilot to fly a Stirling, and together with 2 other aircraft, flew the first operational sortie over enemy territory. We could not have a more appropriate leader to head our cause. We also enjoy the patronage of Dame Vera Lynn D.B.E. L.L.D. M.MUS. and Frank Clear D.F.C. Both have been supportive of our venture and for this we thank them wholeheartedly.

Our Society holds quarterly informal lunches at its various branches which are mainly in the southern half of the country. These lunches give members and their partners an opportunity to meet old friends and make some new acquaintances.

Ties, Scarves, and car stickers, have been designed, and ordered and will be available shortly.

Membership details are available from our Membership Secretary, Dennis Royston, 'Vandere', Westfield Road, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. TA8 2AW. E-mail:. vandere@talktalk.net
